In 2002, after a difficult year at home, we decided to take a “special” holiday before Christmas. This was to be the start of a passionate love affair with South Africa and her neighbours. Little did we realise that in those 3 short weeks we would become totally addicted to the “Rainbow Nation” and in the following 17 years (and counting) we would travel some 100000 kilometres by car and safari van around South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, eSwatini and Zimbabwe – always taking the most roundabout routes least travelled. And we managed a quick trip to Mauritius as well!
These pages document some of these amazing trips, with photos of some of the places we have been lucky enough to stay in, and some of the fabulous animals, birds and even insects that we have seen.
The accounts are our own diaries of what we have done and seen. They were never intended for publication and were originally sent as emails during our trips. Gradually over the years the list of “recipients” grew from a few family members, to include friends as well, and now even includes a number of local South Africans we have met on our travels.
We will continue to send the emails as long as we travel to Southern Africa, and hope that you enjoy reading about our travels as much as we enjoy the journeys.
